BRIEF NOTE ABOUT MOTOR OIL VISCOSITY RATINGS
Posted on June 23, 2023
Questions about motor oil viscosity ratings are among the top FAQs our Alfa ROmeo of Oakville service department team members receive from customers. What do the ratings mean, and how do you interpret them to pick the best motor oil for your engine?
Motor oil viscosity ratings use numbers and letters to indicate a particular oil’s thickness at a given temperature. For example, a common rating of 10W-30 means this oil has a viscosity rating of 10 during winter or when the engine is cold and 30 when the engine is warm or hot. Motor oil must be loose enough to lubricate and clean your engine, but it shouldn’t be too watery. A lower viscosity or degree of thickness is best if you live in a cold climate primarily or have long winters. A higher viscosity might best suit an engine that works year-round in a warmer climate.
Remember to have your motor oil changed at least every three months. Schedule service at our Oakville, ON dealership today.
